An independent audit report regarding Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice facilities was released yesterday.
One section in particular highlighted the facility in neighboring Adair County.
According to the audit, staff at the facility used pepper spray a reported 41 times during nine months last year, from March – November.
That made up about 63 percent of reported pepper spray uses in juvenile justice facilities.
The facility in Warren County reported the next-most at 12 uses during that nine-month period.
Auditors said staff in Kentucky’s juvenile detention centers have used pepper spray at a rate nearly 74 times higher than in federal prisons that house adults.
