Lakers, Lady Lakers fall to Metcalfe in home district doubleheader

It was a tough night for the Russell County Laker and Lady Laker Basketball teams last night as Russell County was defeated in both games at home by Metcalfe County.

In the first game, the Lady Hornets jumped out to an early lead over the Lady Lakers, holding a 10-point lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Lakers battled back and cut the deficit to one point in the third quarter, but the Lady Hornets finished strong, outscoring Russell County 17-11 in the final quarter to come away with a 58-47 victory, capping off a regular-season sweep over the Lady Lakers.

The matchup between the Lakers and Hornets was close throughout, as Russell County led by one at halftime and the teams entered the fourth quarter tied at 55. In the fourth quarter, the Hornets were able to come away with a victory, winning by a score of 79-78.

The Hornets put up their best perimeter shooting performance of the season, knocking down 12 of 21 three pointers, finishing the night at 57 percent from beyond the arc. The Hornets came into the game shooting about 29 percent from the perimeter.

The Lakers and Lady Lakers will look to regroup this Friday as they host another district doubleheader, this time with Monroe County coming to town.

Tip-off for the girls game is at 6 p.m.
