Lake level just slightly lower than recent years

Water levels are slightly lower at Lake Cumberland than in previous years.

Yesterday, water levels at Lake Cumberland came in at about 687 feet.

That is about 5 feet lower than at this same time last year when levels were at about 692.5 feet.

The current level is the lowest it has been at this time in the year dating back the last six years.

The winter pool level at Lake Cumberland is about 690 feet.

Low water levels are mostly attributed to dry conditions in recent weeks. The most recent map released by the U.S. Drought Monitor shows Russell County and the Lake Cumberland area to be in severe drought.

The local mesonet site has recorded less than 2 inches of precipitation during the month of December.

While lake levels are lower, experts say it is not a significant concern right now.
