City of Somerset employee injured after being hit by car following parade

A City of Somerset employee was struck by a car and seriously injured while cleaning up following the city’s Christmas Parade over the weekend.

The Somerset Police Department is investigating the incident, in which they say 53-year-old Bruce Owens suffered multiple injuries after he was struck by a 2004 Chevy Impala driven by 20-year-old Daymon Roberts of Somerset.

Owens was reportedly using a backpack-style leaf blower to blow debris from the parade off of sidewalks and into the street, where a street sweeper would later be used to pick it up.

Roberts was reportedly driving about 35 mph when the collision occurred. Neither drugs nor alcohol are believed to be factors, but police noted inattention as a possible factor.

According to reports, Owens was taken to Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital and then transferred to a Lexington hospital.
