Fiscal court considers proposal for courthouse repairs, work at detention center

The Russell County Fiscal Court heard from The Perfection Group again at this week’s meeting.

The group spoke to the court about some proposals to fix some “big ticket” items, which mostly focused on the courthouse and the detention center.

The major items mentioned included a new roof for a portion of the courthouse to repair water damage and prevent more in the future, some wall panel work, HVAC work at the detention center, along with more energy-efficient lighting at both buildings.

Judge Executive Randy Marcum added that he believes “kicking the can down the road” is not a good option because it will cost the county more in the long run as there will be more work needed and costs of material and labor would likely increase.

Marcum added that another item that wasn’t mentioned in the proposal was HVAC work at the courthouse, which is needed due to issues throughout the building, but the county is looking at some more short-term fixes right now.

After some discussion, the court voted to table the topic until the full court can discuss, as magistrate Mickey Garner was absent for this week’s meeting.
