The Russell County Laker soccer team faced off against the Barren County Trojans at home for the season opener, coming away with a 3-2 victory.
The Lakers spent most of the first half attacking a stingy Trojan defense. Taven Roy-Foley broke through for a goal midway through the half off a pass from Berkeley Clark.
Early in the second half, Taven Roy-Foley scored again, this time off a pass from Andre Perez.
The Trojans came right back with renewed intensity after that and capitalized on a Laker mistake to make it 2-1.
With 17 minutes left in the game, the Trojans forced another Laker mistake to tie it up.
With a few minutes left, Taven Roy-Foley sent a pass across the face of the goal for a Yarley Medrano score to give the Lakers the lead. The Trojans didn’t give up, but the Laker defense and keeper held strong to end the game 3-2.
The JV team also came through with a big victory, winning 4-0.
Carlos Lopez passed to his brother Jose for the first goal in the 4th minute.
The Lakers never looked back, staying on the attack for the remainder of the half although they didn’t score again until 16 minutes into the second half when Luis Lopez sent a pass to his brother Jose for his and the Lakers second goal of the night.
The game stayed pretty even until the 54th minute when Gio Gomez sent a pass to Carlos Lopez for the third goal of the night.
The Lakers, and the game’s, 4th and final goal came when Alex Gomez sent a high ball toward the goal for Yahir Reyes, who scored with 3 minutes left.
The Lakers will go on the road to Southwestern Friday night beginning at 5 p.m. CT.
