Two charged after car drives into Monticello Elementary School

Two people were arrested in neighboring Wayne County after a car reportedly drove into Monticello Elementary School.

According to reports from law enforcement in Wayne County, a woman called dispatch just after 5 p.m. Sunday and said she lost control of her vehicle at the nearby intersection, colliding with the school building.

Officers responded to a residence to speak with the woman and another female who claimed to be a passenger.

After viewing video surveillance, officers determined that the two women swapped positions in the car.

The driver of the vehicle, 41-year-old Heather Patton of Lexington, is charged with operating on a suspended license, leaving the scene of an accident, obstructing governmental operations, and disregarding a stop sign.

Ashley Barnes, age 40 of Monticello, the passenger in the vehicle, was also charged with obstructing governmental operations.
