Federal, state agencies called in due to gas issue at local station

Federal and state agencies have been in Russell Springs working on a gas issue at Jax’s in Russell Springs.

The presence of state vehicles at the local gas station began to raise some questions, and WJRS News spoke with a state agency involved.

According to John Mura with the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet, the cabinet’s Emergency Response Team was called in to Russell Springs and was not able to identify an active leak, but identified the presence of gasoline in a groundwater monitoring well that had been installed at Jax’s as part of an on-going corrective action investigation by the Cabinet’s Underground Storage Tank Branch.

The team performed product recovery from the well and subsequently plugged the well, according to Mura.

The team also ventilated nearby homes and are continuing to perform daily screening. Current readings from within the living space of the homes do not identify the presence of gasoline vapor at concentrations above an actionable level, according to Mura.
