Local, statewide wild turkey harvests increase this year

With the 2023 spring wild turkey hunting season coming to a close this past weekend, preliminary harvest results from this season have been released by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife.

In Russell County, hunters took a total of 252 turkeys with 250 of those being male. Of that number, 249 were taken with a firearm and three were taken with archery. In 2022, a total of 203 turkeys were harvested in Russell County.

The neighboring counties of Pulaski saw 653 turkeys harvested, Adair 535, Casey County 430, Wayne 358, Cumberland County 324 and Clinton with 217.

Statewide, a total of 35,636 turkeys were taken by hunters this season, an increase from the 26,862 harvested in 2022. Prior to the start of the season, state wildlife officials predicted a higher number of birds would be taken this year.
