RCHS Swim has strong showing at region, several qualify for state

The Laker Swimmers and Divers competed over the past few days in the Region 3 Swimming & Diving Championship.

Our Laker Divers got us started on the right foot this week as they travelled to the University of Louisville on Wednesday.  Ella Pierce came home as the Regional Champion, and Allie Wilkerson was Runner-Up.  This was a great start for these ladies as it was their first trip to the Regional Meet.

The Regional Swimming Championship Meet had 274 competitors from 19 teams travel to Russell County for the annual championship meet.  The Laker Swimmers started their competition on Friday and had successful swims and great times on the day.  Of the 23 swimmers the Lakers had compete, they had 18 swimmers qualify to swim during Saturday’s Final Session.  There were 31 personal best swims during the prelim session.

The Lakers moved into the Final Session with energy and looking toward to capturing hardware during the day.  The girls 200 Medley Relay of Haylan Pierce, Blair Brumett, Kendall Melton, and Ally Stephens got the meet started with a solid 4th Place Finish.  The boys 200 Medley of Jacob Phillips, Jameson Webb, Jameson Webb, and Ben Kislan followed with another 4th place finish as well.

The Lakers swam to 20 Top 8 Finishes, 1 Runner Up Finish, and two Region Titles.

Jacob Phillips swam to a Region Title in the 200 Freestyle and a Runner up Finish in the 500 Freestyle.  Jacob also lowered his Laker Team Records in the 200 Free & 500 Free over the weekend as well.

The 200 Freestyle Relay of Marlei DeVore, Haylan Pierce, Kendall Melton, and Alexa Stephens finished in the champions spot, and are headed to KHSAA State Meet as an automatic qualifier.

The Lady Lakers finished as Regional Runner-Ups, against a strong field of teams.

Ella Pierce & Jacob Phillips were selected to the All-Region Team.

The following swimmers/divers will be competing at KHSAA State Championship at University of Kentucky in two weeks.  They will join the top 40 qualifiers from around the Commonwealth to compete for individual and team titles.
