New year brings changes to state unemployment system

The new year brings one of the most significant changes to the Kentucky unemployment system in more than 80 years.

The new bill changes the system to go from a maximum 26 weeks of benefits to 12-24 weeks, with the benefit period depending on the state’s unemployment rate.

The new bill also increases work search requirements from one to five per week in order to remain eligible for the benefits.
