Monticello man charged with attempting to kill police officer

A Monticello man has been charged with attempting to murder a police officer.

According to Monticello Police, 24-year-old Zachary Dean was arrested on several charges including attempted murder of a police officer, kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, three counts of attempted robbery 1st degree, numerous counts of wanton endangerment, fleeing or evading police (on foot) and resisting arrest.

At approximately 5:50 p.m. Saturday, the Monticello-Wayne County 911 Dispatch received a call from Thompson Road with the father reporting his daughter’s ex-boyfriend had taken her against her will, forcing her into his truck, and was traveling down Spann Hill toward KY 3106.

A chase ensued, and at one point, officers had Dean surrounded in a parking lot, but he refused to drop his weapon and attempted to steal two cars.

According to police, at one point, Dean aimed his gun at an officer and attempted to fire his weapon, but the gun did not fire.

Dean was lodged in the Wayne County Detention Center.
