The Laker boys’ basketball team battled back from an early 14 point deficit and hit key free throws down the stretch to win 63-54 over district foe Metcalfe County at Laker Gym on Tuesday night.
Braydon Cerrato led the way for the Lakers with 22 points, Mayes Gosser finished with 17 points, and Owen Loy added 15 points. Trace Stringer also scored eight points for Russell County.
The Lakers moved to 3-1 on the young season and 1-0 in district play with the win.
In the girls’ game, the Lady Hornets bested the Lady Lakers, defeating Russell County by a score of 56-41.
Jaterria Coffey was the Lady Lakers’ leading scorer with 11 points while Aniyah Coffey finished with nine points in the loss. Maleah Preston added seven points for the Lady Lakers.
With the loss, the Lady Lakers fell to 0-5 on the season.
The Lakers and Lady Lakers travel to Albany on Friday night for a district doubleheader with Clinton County. The girls’ game tips off at 6 p.m. with the boys’ matchup to follow.
