Disturbing new details emerge about Adair Youth Detention Center riot

Some disturbing new details are emerging about a riot at the Adair Youth Detention Center last Friday.

A spokesperson from the Kentucky Justice and Public Safety Cabinet confirmed to WJRS News on Wednesday that Kentucky State Police is investigating an alleged sexual assault against a female juvenile that occurred during the riot Friday night.

The riot started when a juvenile seriously assaulted a staff member, confiscated the staff member’s keys and released other juveniles from their cells at the center.

According to the cabinet, the female victim was housed in a separate wing from where the riot began. The victim has been transferred to another facility and is receiving counseling services.

Charges will be assessed once the KSP investigation concludes.

According to the Adair County Community Voice, a total of eight people were taken to the hospital with injuries from the situation, and the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet confirmed that one of the staff members who was injured was airlifted to a hospital.

The Department of Juvenile Justice is continuing to investigate the incident.
