Egg season underway at fish hatchery

An often overlooked but important event took place last week at Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery. Egg season officially began at the hatchery with the more than 292,000 “Erwin X Arlee” Rainbow trout eggs received from the Erwin National Fish Hatchery in Erwin, Tennessee.

This is the first of many shipments scheduled for Wolf Creek from now through June of 2023 when the egg season wraps up.

Also, hatchery staff with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service along with personnel from the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife stocked 6-inch Rainbow trout at several sites last week with Winfrey’s Ferry receiving 10,000 trout and Helm’s Landing receiving 10,000 trout in the stocking. Both of these locations are in Russell County.

Hatchery Creek below Wolf Creek Dam is stocked every other day, according to hatchery officials. The Cumberland River is stocked at least one day a month, and possibly more depending on the fish trucks’ availability.
