Former Columbia Police Chief indicted for stealing money

The former Police Chief for the Columbia Police Department has been indicted in federal court for stealing more than $25,000 from the City of Columbia.

The indictment, handed down on Thursday in U.S. District Court, alleges that between February 2020 and February 2021, Jason D. Cross, age 44, stole more than $25,000 from the police department evidence locker and the city’s drug purchase fund.

If convicted, Cross would face a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

The Kentucky State Police are investigating the case.

Cross served as the Columbia Police Chief for 10 years before retiring in March 2021.

WJRS News would like to remind our listeners and readers that an indictment is a legal accusation and does not imply guilt or innocence.
