Bill expanding Kentucky organ donor program approved in legislature

A bill that would expand Kentucky’s organ donor registry by providing more opportunities for people to register has passed the Kentucky Legislature and will now head to the Governor’s desk to be signed into law.

The bill, SB 30, passed unanimously in both chambers and will expand the registry by asking people if they want to become an organ donor when they renew their vehicle registration, either in-person or online.

Currently, Kentuckians are asked if they want to register as an organ donor when they renew their driver’s licenses.

About 60 percent of Kentuckians are organ donors, according to Donate Life KY.

Anyone interested in becoming an organ donor can do so here.
