Russell County swept by Cumberland County Monday night

The Russell County Lakers and Lady Lakers were swept by Cumberland County Monday night at Laker Gym.

In the first game, the Lady Lakers dug themselves into an early hole, trailing by 10 after the first quarter but clawed back and had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds, but the Lady Panthers were able to hold on for the win.

On Senior Night, it was Lady Laker Senior Sophie Shearer who led the way, scoring a game-high 21 points to go along with six rebounds. Addison Hart added 11 for the Lady Lakers and Maleah Preston finished with 8 points and a team-high 7 rebounds.

The Lady Lakers are now 7-15 on the season.

In the nightcap, the Lakers fell by a score of 54-44.

The Panthers led 20-19 at the halftime break and were able to extend the lead in the second half to come away with a 10-point win. With the loss, the Lakers move to 3-18 and will finish 0-6 in district play. It’s the first time since moving to the 16th District in 2005 that the Lakers have gone winless in district play in the regular season.

Trace Stringer led the Lakers in scoring with 13 points on the night, followed by Owen Loy with 10, Mayes Gosser with 8, and Maddox Shearer and Braydon Cerrato with 6 each.

Tonight, the Lakers and Lady Lakers will both be in action with the girls hosting Metcalfe County in district action and the boys going on the road to Southwestern.

The Lady Lakers will tip off around 7 p.m. following the JV game and the boys will tip off at 6:30 p.m. CT.
