Melson, Stringer win region bowling titles

The Laker Bowling Team traveled to Philips Lanes in Campbellsville to compete in the KHSAA 2nd Region Tournament this past week.

In the Singles Event, Makayla Melson, Korrin Therrien, Hailey Pankop, and Karlie Skaggs were in action for our Lady Lakers. After 3 games of qualifying Karlie Skaggs was in 2nd place, Hailey Pankop was in 5th place, Makayla Melson was in 6th place, and Korrin Therrien finished in 12th place. Karlie, Hailey, and Makayla Advanced to the top 8 semi-final round where they bowled two more games. Hailey Pankop finished in 6th place after the semi final round.
With two big games Makayla Melson advanced to 1st place and Karlie Scaggs was in 3rd place going  into the top 4 step ladder finals.
In the first game of the Finals, Karlie was defeated by North Hardin’s Yasmin Padro to finish in 4th Place. Yasmin went on to win the semi-final match to face Russell County’s Makayla Melson in the Championship Game.
Makayla Jumped out to an early lead and never let up to win the match 165-144 to take the 1st place in the Girls Singles.
For the boys, Dylan Stringer, Nick Blakey, Wyatt Neale, and Will Aaron competed in the singles event. After 3 games of qualifying, Dylan Stringer was in 3rd place, Nick Blakey was in 5th place, Will Aaron finished in 16th place, and Wyatte Neale finished in 21st place.
Dylan and Nick advanced to the top 8 semi-final round where they bowled 2 more games. With 2 great games, Nick Blakey found himself in 1st place and Dylan Stringer was in 4th place to advance into the top 4 stepladder finals.
In the first match of the step ladder Dylan faced John Hardin’s Kyle Warden and defeated him 179-138, advancing to the semi-final game against Taylor County’s Jakeb Kelsy and defeated him also 212-203, to move into the championship game against his teammate Nick Blakey.
Dylan had found his groove and defeated Nick 258-191 to take 1st place in the Boys Singles. Nick came in second, also earning a spot in the state competition.
In the team event, the Lady Lakers were the #2 seed after the qualifying game and received a bye in the first round of the bracket advancing them to the round of 8.
In the second round they faced Fort Knox High School where the Lady Lakers won the first and second game but lost the next three to finish 5th in the region.
The Laker Boys were the #1 seed after the qualifying game and received a bye in the first round of the bracket  advancing them to the round of 8. In the quarterfinal round, they faced Bardstown High School and won the first three games to advance to the semi-final round against John Hardin High School.
The Lakers won the first game but lost the next three to take 3rd Place in the region Tournament.
Today,  Makayla Melson and Karlie Skaggs will be competing in the KHSAA State Bowling Tournament Girls Singles Event at Executive Strike & Spare in Louisville at 1:30 p.m.
Tomorrow, Dylan Stringer and Nick Blakey will be competing in the KHSAA State Bowling Tournament Boys Singles Event at 1:30 p.m.
