Lakers, Lady Lakers defeat Adair County in Friday night home doubleheader

It’s been a tumultuous season for the Russell County Lakers and Lady Lakers, but Friday night was a night for celebration as the Lakers and Lady Lakers knocked off Adair County in the last home doubleheader of the season.

The Lady Lakers started the night with a 66-57 win over the Lady Indians of Adair County, exacting some revenge from the two matchups earlier this season that Adair County won.

The Lady Indians led 12-8 after the first quarter but the Lady Lakers tied it up right before halftime and finished strong in the second half to get the win.

The Lady Lakers had a pretty balanced scoring column with 3 Lady Lakers in double figures. Jaterria Coffey led the scoring for the Lady Lakers with 13 points, along with a pair of steals.

The x-factor for the Lady Lakers was freshman Rachel Bolin, who has missed most of the season with an injury but immediately contributed in her return, playing 16 minutes and scoring 12 points, including 2 three-pointers.

Hannah Yates added 10 points and 6 rebounds. Maleah Preston and Sophie Shearer each finished with 6 rebounds as well.

As a team, the Lakers finished with just 10 turnovers, one of their best performances of the season in that regard.

The win moves the Lady Lakers to 8-17 on the season.

On the boys side, the Lakers came away with a big win, defeating the 15-8 Indians by a score of 74-62.

The Lakers came out firing early, taking a 19-15 lead after the first quarter. Coming out of halftime, where the Lakers led 37-33, they outscored the Indians by 8 in the second half to get the win.

It was Trace Stringer and Mayes Gosser leading the way for the Lakers. Stringer had his best game of the season, scoring a game-high 28 points on 10-15 shooting and 6-9 on three pointers.

Gosser finished with 25 points and a team-high 9 rebounds, knocking down 7-11 shots from the field and going a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line.

Braydon Cerrato added 10 points for the Lakers in the win, as the Lakers shot 59.5 percent from the floor and finished 7-12 from beyond the arc along with a 23-29 performance from the free throw line.

The Lakers are 4-19 on the season.

The boys return to action tomorrow with a trip to 12th-region leading Pulaski County. The girls are off until Monday when they host Somerset in a rematch from the season opener.
