Gusty Winds and Severe Weather Risk

Good Wednesday, everyone. The winds are cranking up this morning and that trend will continue today and into our Thursday. The National Weather Service in Louisville has posted a Wind Advisory for Russell and surrounding counties. This advisory will be in effect today and tomorrow.

The projected wind gusts for today and tomorrow are still showing to be very strong. Some folks could see wind gusts in excess of 50mph, especially tomorrow. It would be a good time to tie down any loose lawn furniture and make sure to sit your trash cans in a place where they cannot be blown around.

Our attention will focus for the day tomorrow as a few strong to severe storms could develop. The Storm Prediction Center has now placed most of Kentucky in a level 2 “Slight Risk” for severe weather. Showers could begin late tonight and especially into the morning hours on Thursday.

Latest run of the NAM has some initial showers and storms tomorrow morning, and a possible squall line moving into the region tomorrow evening.

The CAPE or “fuel” for strong to severe storms continues to be on the low end. Folks in far Western Kentucky and into West Tennessee appear to have a better chance of severe weather due to higher CAPE values in those areas.

While the CAPE remains low, there is plenty of wind energy in the upper atmosphere. There have been many severe weather events in our part of the world with low CAPE values and high wind energy. This is definitely something worth keeping an eye on.

This next map is the STP or Significant Tornado Parameter. It’s something we look at for tornado potential during severe weather events. While the threat for tornado activity is low, I cannot rule out an isolated tornado for some.

I will post updates as new information is available. Stay tuned to Laker Country 104.9 for additional severe weather information.
