Lakers, Lady Lakers fall in doubleheader at Metcalfe County

Both the Lakers and Lady Lakers were defeated in a district doubleheader at Metcalfe County on Tuesday.

The Lady Lakers fell 51-29 as the Lady Lakers drop to 2-4 on the season.

It was a tough night for the Lady Lakers offensively, as the team shot just 3-18 from the floor in the second half and went 2-15 behind the arc on the night. Turnovers plagued the offense too, as the Lady Lakers turned the ball over 25 times in the game.

Hannah Yates led the scoring for the Lady Lakers, finishing with 14 points on the night to go along with a team-high 11 rebounds. Jaterria Coffey scored 5 points for the Lady Lakers, as Maleah Preston and Sophie Shearer finished with 4 points each and Karley Antle added 2 points.

It was a rough night for the Lakers as well, who struggled defensively against the Hornets as Metcalfe County came away with a 82-66 victory.

The Lakers came out of the gate strong, and held an 18-16 lead at the end of the first quarter and only trailed by six at halftime, but the Hornets opened things up in the second as Metcalfe shot 53 percent from the field on the night, including 15-26 in the second half where they led by as many as 27 in the 4th quarter.

The Lakers shot about 43 percent from the floor on the night, finishing 23-53.

Mayes Gosser led the scoring for the Lakers, with 25 points on 8-17 shooting. Trace Stringer was also in double figures with 13 points. Braydon Cerrato finished with 9 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Jack Shearer also came away with 8 rebounds on the night.

The Lakers now move to 0-5 on the season with another district matchup against Clinton County coming up on Friday. The Bulldogs are undefeated at 5-0 on the season with district wins over Metcalfe and Cumberland counties.

As for the Lady Lakers, their game against Clinton County Friday night has been postponed, so their next scheduled game is Monday when the team travels to Gatlinburg for an appearance in the Smokey Mountain Classic.
