Local candidates begin filing for 2022 Elections

The race is on for the 2022 elections, as local candidates have begun filing for offices that will be on the ballot next year.

Clarissa “Moochie” Hart has filed to run for Russell County Judge-Executive. Hart previously ran for the office in 2018, narrowly losing to incumbent Gary Robertson, who has publicly stated he does not plan to seek another term.

Former Russell County Sheriff Clete McAninch has also filed to run for County Judge-Executive. McAninch served as sheriff before losing in 2018 to current sheriff Derek Polston.

In the County Clerk race, three people filed on opening day. Sherita Medaris, Patti Glover, and Amy Riggins Melson have all filed to run for that position.

Russell County Sheriff Derek Polston has filed for re-election to a second term as sheriff. He will have at least one challenger in Nick Bertram.  Bertram is former long time deputy under former Sheriffs Larry Bennett and McAninch.

Several other incumbents have also filed for re-election.

Jailer Bobby Dunbar, Coroner Mark Coots, and County Attorney Kevin Shearer have all filed for re-election, along with Magistrates Terry Waddell in District 1, Mickey Garner in District 2, and Steve Richardson in District 4. Greg Hammond has filed for re-election as Constable in District 4 and Richard Wooldridge has also filed for re-election to be the Constable in District 5.

Zach Wilson has filed to run for Magistrate in District 3.

We’ll keep you informed as more candidates begin to file for office.
