Lois Virginia Cherry of Russell Springs

Lois Virginia Cherry was born October 3, 1926, in Macon County, Tennessee, the daughter of the late Pattie Dickens Mitchell and Henry Howard Mitchell.  She married Corporal Donnie Cherry on June 8, 1943.  Donnie served in the U.S. Army during WWII and fought at Omaha Beach and in the Battle of the Bulge.

After the war, they made their home in Lafayette, Tennessee before moving to Russell Springs in the summer of 1953.  After Donnie’s death in 1982, Virginia cared for pre-school children in her home for several years.  This was something she enjoyed along with working in her flowers and cooking for her family.  She loved her grandchildren and would always say how proud she was of them, and that they were the “smartest of all grandchildren”.  She was a member of the Russell Springs Christian Church for many years.

She is survived by a son, Tommy (and Loretta) Cherry, of Russell Springs; a daughter, June (and Garris) Sullivan, of Russell Springs; five grandchildren, Lisa (and Gary) Overstreet, of Mount Washington, Kentucky, Dr. Brent (and Dr. Allison) Cherry, of Somerset, Kentucky, Leah Anderson, of Russell Springs, Kentucky, Scott (and AshleyRose) Sullivan, of Valencia, California, and Dr. Dana Sullivan, of Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Eight great-grandchildren also survive:  Zachary (and Megan) Overstreet, Andrew Overstreet, Jacob Conner, John Conner, Aubrey Anderson, Evan Cherry, Ellen Cherry and Beau Cherry.  One great-great-grandchild also survives, Makenzie Overstreet.

In addition to her husband and parents, Virginia was preceded in death by her beloved son, Benny Joe Cherry in 1967; six brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services are 1:00 p.m. CST, Wednesday, October 6, 2021, at Russell Springs Christian Church, with Bro. Carroll Egnew and Bro. Donnie Emerson officiating.  Interment will follow in Russell Springs City Cemetery.  Virginia’s great-grandsons, Zachary, Andrew, Jacob, John, Evan and Beau will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held after 10:00 a.m. CST on Wednesday, at the church, until time for services.

The Cherry family requests facial coverings are worn during visitation and funeral services.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Russell Springs Christian Church.

Virginia’s arrangements are entrusted to Bernard Funeral Home.  An online guestbook is available to www.bernardfuneralhome.com
