The Russell County Lakers fell to the Adair County Indians in their season opener Friday night by a score of 46-7.
The Indians opened the scoring by returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown. The Lakers responded on their opening drive with a touchdown of their own as QB Gavin Gossage scored on a run. That would wind up being the only points of the game for the Lakers as the Indians controlled the game from there.
Gossage threw for 29 yards on the night, completing 4 of 11 passes while adding 35 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground.
Freshman QB Owen Loy entered the game late, completing 4 of 7 passes for 27 yard and 5 carries for 10 yards.
Colton Feece rushed for 20 yards on 8 carries and Braxton Walters rushed for 13 on the same number of carries.
Blake Bolin finished the game with four catches for 23 yards, while Feece added two catches for 17 yards. Kelby Grider and Mayes Gosser each finished with one reception on the night.
Kicker Yarley Medrano was successful on his lone PAT.
Defensively, Braxton Walters led the way for the Lakers with nine total tackles. Larin Coffey and Gage Hicks finished with 8 tackles each. The Lakers finished with four tackles for loss on the night, and Sawyer Harris recorded the team’s lone sack.
The Lakers are back in action this Friday as they travel to Somerset to take on the Briar Jumpers in a matchup between two teams looking for their first win of the season. The Briar Jumpers were handily defeated by Lincoln County Friday by a score of 50-20.
