Lakers look for district win at Warren Central

The Russell County Lakers (2-0) will look to pick up their third consecutive win to start the season when they hit the road for the first time in 2020 to take on the Warren Central Dragons (0-2) in a district match-up.

The Lakers come in riding high off back-to-back wins to start the season in which they outscored their opponents 95-19, while the Dragons are in the midst of a losing streak that spans back to Oct. 2015 and have not scored in the first two games of the season so far, being shut out 82-0.

According to the KHSAA, the Dragons have compiled 110 yards of offense during their first two games, while allowing 683 yards rushing and 148 yards passing.

That could bode well for Russell County’s dynamic backfield duo of Collin Darnell and Dylan Bland, who have combined for 319 yards and four touchdowns on the ground to start the season, along with QB Gavin Gossage, who is averaging 58 rushing yards per game.

The Lakers defeated Warren Central last year 51-22 in a game in which Bland and Darnell ran wild to the tune of 318 yards and four touchdowns, while Gossage threw for 84 yards and two touchdowns. In that contest, the Lakers picked off three passes and totaled 10 tackles for loss.

You can catch all the action live from Warren Central High School LIVE on Laker Country 104.9 WJRS with Tony Kerr and Josh Branscum on the call. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday night.
