Russell Springs man indicted on rape, incest charges

A Russell Springs man was indicted yesterday on charges of first-degree rape, incest, and other crimes.

A Russell County grand jury indicted 54-year-old David Holderfield of Russell Springs on charges of first-degree rape, incest, sexual abuse first degree, unlawful transaction with a minor first degree, and two other counts of sexual abuse first degree and unlawful transaction with a minor involving a different victim.

The crimes took place as early as Sept. 2006, according to the indictment, and as recently as January 2024.

Another Russell Springs man was indicted on sexual crimes yesterday.

Shawn A. Whalen, age 34, was indicted on charges of sexual abuse first degree, unlawful transaction with a minor first degree, tampering with physical evidence, and being a persistent felony offender.

The grand jury handed down several other indictments yesterday. Those indicted included the following:

Emily McKinney, age 27, and Joe Johnson, age 30, both of Russell Springs, charged with falsely reporting an incident and tampering with physical evidence.

According to state police, the charges stem from an incident last month in which a 10-month-old child belonging to McKinney suffered severe injuries from a dog bite, resulting in the child being flown to the University of Kentucky Hospital.

State Police say McKinney and Johnson initially told first responders the dog was a stray, but an investigation revealed the dog involved actually belonged to the couple and Johnson concealed its location following the incident.

Cody Gaines, age 25 of Jabez, was indicted on charges of wanton endangerment first degree, violation of a Kentucky EPO/DVO, menacing and terroristic threatening.

Samantha Gosser, age 35 of Dunnville, was charged with possession of a controlled substance first degree, possession of a controlled substance second degree, possession of a controlled substance third degree, prescription substance not in the proper container, possession of marijuana, no operators license, and rear license plat not illuminated.

Darian Riddle, age 52 of Albany, charged with theft by unlawful taking $1,000 or more and being a persistent felony offender.

Michael C. Ballou, age 58 of Russell Springs, charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, failure to produce an insurance card and no registration plate.

Jimmie Gosser, age 25 of Russell Springs, charged with two counts of burglary third degree, criminal mischief first degree, and being a persistent felony offender.

Franklin Sanger III, age 39 of Mackville, charged with bail jumping first degree and being a persistent felony offender.

Denzel Alcorn, age 28 of Russell Springs, charged with flagrant nonsupport and being a persistent felony offender.

Christopher Hatchell, age 37 of Louisville, charged with bail jumping first degree.
