Lake Cumberland region starting to see shortage in ICU beds

Hospital capacity has become a topic of concern, particularly in the Lake Cumberland region as hospitalizations from COVID-19 rise.

A WKYT interactive map shows just how much of an issue hospital capacity is becoming in the region.

A quick look at this graphic for the 10-county region shows that 55.3 percent of inpatient beds are being used and 37.1 percent of ventilators. Those numbers aren’t too alarming to health officials, but it is something they’re keeping a close eye on.

The number that many local health officials are looking at is the 95.7 percent of ICU beds currently being utilized. This is problematic not only for COVID patients, but for patients seeking immediate medical care for things such as heart attacks, strokes, accidents, etc.

The Lake Cumberland area has the highest number of ICU beds in use as of now. The Lake Cumberland District Health Department reported 98 individuals from the district hospitalized due to COVID-19.
