The Russell County Laker football team is preparing for the start of a new season, and Head Coach Steven French says while the roster may be smaller this year, he likes what he’s seeing from his team.
WJRS NEWS talked with Coach French following Sunday afternoon’s “Meet the Lakers” event at Finley Field at the Charlene Harris Athletic Complex.
French said the Lakers’ numbers are down compared to previous seasons, but he’s happy to take what he calls “quality over quantity.”
The Laker coach says the team has made significant strides since practices began in June. And while winning is always the goal, French says his focus is on getting what he calls his “dirty thirty” to play together as one unit rather than as individuals. If they do that, French believes the wins will take care of themselves.
The Lakers open the regular season at home Friday, August 21st against Adair County. They’ll remain at home the following week to take on LaRue County before traveling to Campbellsville on September 4th.
Russell County returns home for games against Belfry on September 11th and Taylor County on September 18th, followed by a road trip to Green County on September 25th.
After an open week, the Lakers begin district play October 9th on the road against Boyle County. Russell County hosts Wayne County on October 16th before traveling to Lincoln County for another district matchup on October 23rd.
The Lakers close out the regular season October 30th on the road against Monroe County.
The season opener against Adair County is set for 7 o’clock Friday night, August 21st, at Finley Field.
