The Russell County Board of Education took care of several items during its regular meeting Monday evening, July 20th, including financial updates, personnel, student activities and facilities.
Superintendent Michael Ford told board members the school district remains in solid financial condition. Ford reported all accounts have been reconciled, June bills have been paid, and the district has cash on hand totaling more than $14.2 million.
Ford also reported that no members of the public attended or submitted comments during the District Facilities Plan hearing held July 16. He said construction of a new Russell County Middle School continues to be the district’s top facilities priority.
Board members unanimously approved a grant-funded instructional assistant position at Salem Elementary School through the Read to Achieve Grant program.
The board also approved the renewal of contracts and memorandums of understanding with several mental health care providers to continue student support services throughout the district.
In other action, the board approved an overnight trip for Russell County High School FFA members to attend the Kentucky State Fair and Exposition Center on August 19th and 20th.
Board members also voted to declare the old high school stage and approximately 75 chairs as surplus property and authorized advertising for bids to sell the items.
The board also approved a policy allowing parents to transport their children home following school-related events held away from campus. The change applies to all school activities and is not limited to athletic events.
