The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for the Lake Cumberland region through 8 p.m. Thursday. Forecasters say dangerously hot conditions will produce peak heat index values between 100 and 115 degrees, while warm overnight temperatures will provide little relief.
Officials warn that prolonged exposure to the heat can quickly lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke, especially for older adults, young children, and those working or exercising outdoors.
Residents are urged to drink plenty of water, stay in air-conditioned buildings when possible, avoid direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day, and wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing. Outdoor activities should be limited to the early morning or evening hours.
Also, be sure to check on relatives and neighbors, and never leave children or pets inside a parked vehicle. Interior temperatures can become deadly within just a few minutes.
