Fiscal court holds first reading of false alarm ordinance

The Russell County Fiscal Court held the first reading of an ordinance regarding false alarms at its meeting this morning.

The ordinance addresses false alarm calls from alarm systems and includes penalties if 3 or more false alarm calls originate at a single residence within a fiscal year.

The penalties include a $300 fine for the third or more false alarm call that originates from a single address within a year.

Russell County Judge-Executive Randy Marcum said the ordinance is due to several false alarm calls that law enforcement and other first responders respond to, which can tie up resources in the case of an actual emergency.

This was just the first reading of an ordinance. Magistrates will have a chance to make changes to the ordinance before it goes up for a second reading and vote. That will likely take place at next month’s fiscal court meeting.
