The longtime superintendent of the Adair Juvenile Detention Center and Youth Development Center has resigned amidst controversy stemming from a riot that occurred at the facility in 2022.
Tonya Rena Burton has managed the facility since 2014 before resigning earlier this month.
The facility in neighboring Adair County has been plagued with problems that began to come to light in November 2022 when a riot broke out at the facility, resulting in multiple people being injured.
Since then, more allegations have been brought to light regarding the facility, including allegations of abuse, neglect, excessive use of pepper spray, and more.
The facility is part of a federal investigation into Kentucky’s Juvenile Detention Centers by the U.S. Justice Department Civil Rights Division and Kentucky Protection and Advocacy.
