The Russell County Laker girls and boys varsity basketball teams went on the road Friday night for a doubleheader at Glasgow. In games heard on Laker Country 1049 WJRS, the Laker girls won the first game, 44 to 27, and the Laker boys lost in the nightcap, 81 to 42.
The Lady Lakers led Glasgow 29 to 15 behind Karley Luttrell’s 10 points off the bench. Luttrell hit two threes and a couple of field goals to lead the Laker to a 14 point halftime lead. The Laker girls were up 17 at the end of the third quarter as Sophie Shearer scored 7 points, then cruised in the final quarter to a 17 point victory. The Lady Lakers are now 1-1 on the season and will play at Bowling Green on Saturday night, before their first home game on Tuesday against Greenwood at 6 o’clock.
The Laker boys fell to 0-2 on the season, losing to Glasgow by 39 points. The Laker boys trailed by 9, 17-8, at the end of the first quarter, then by 18 at halftime, 40-22. Glasgow outscored the Lakers by 18 in the third quarter to open up the score enroute to the victory, 81-42. The Laker boys will take on the state’s 20th ranked team, the Gators of Greenwood High School, on Tuesday night at 7:30 at Laker gym.
