The Russell County Lady Lakers and Laker Boys basketball teams both picked up wins on Saturday.
Coach Brett Blankenship’s Lady Laker team went on the road to Russellville to take on Logan County. The Lady Lakers got an easy victory, defeating Logan County 51 to 27. Seniors Juliah Bault with 17 points and Star Marcum with 14 points led the Lady Lakers, who improved their season record to 8 and 9.
The Laker boys were at home Saturday night for a district matchup against Clinton County. The visiting Bulldogs came into the game with a record of 14-1 and ranked #2 in the 4th region. The Lakers led at halftime and led most of the way in the second half before Clinton County tied the game late. However, Russell County held on, thanks in large part to 8th grader Owen Loy who hit a three pointer with just :02 second to give the Lakers the victory by a final score of 58 to 56. Junior Jay Milburn led Russell County with 18 points, while Loy had 16, and Senior Scott Hamm added 14. The Lakers are now 8 and 9 on the season.
