Students in both Adair and Wayne counties will begin the new school year later than originally planned as construction projects continue at each district.
Adair County Schools announced Tuesday that the first day of classes has been moved to Monday, August 24, to allow additional time to complete preparations for the opening of the new Adair County Middle School. Superintendent Jason Faulkner said while construction is substantially complete, several final items remain unfinished. The extra time will allow staff to install remaining materials, complete safety and operational checks, and ensure classrooms are fully ready for students.
Meanwhile, Wayne County Schools has also delayed the start of the school year because of ongoing construction at the Walker Early Learning Center. Students in kindergarten through 12th grade will now report for their first day of classes on Tuesday, August 25.
The first day of preschool in Wayne County has been rescheduled for Tuesday, September 8, with preschool phase-in days planned for September 2 and 3. Preschool teachers will contact families to schedule those phase-in sessions.
Wayne County officials say delaying the opening of school was not an ideal decision, but it is necessary to ensure the safety of students and staff. The Wayne County Board of Education is expected to approve an amended school calendar during its regular meeting on August 20.
