The Kentucky League of Cities is highlighting Russell Springs and its new Bankers Field of Dreams at Russell Springs City Park.
The field was inspired by Mayor Eddie Thomas, who wanted children with disabilities to have more opportunities to participate in sports locally.
City officials faced the challenge of funding the project without using the city’s general budget. Economic Development Director Jeramy Coffey said local banks and the Russell County School District contributed a total of $135,000. The banks’ support led to the facility being named the Bankers Field of Dreams.
The field was designed with accessibility and safety in mind. Features include wide, open dugouts that accommodate wheelchairs, extra-soft turf and bases built into the playing surface to reduce tripping hazards and wheelchair obstacles.
