Jamestown Council approves donation for upcoming fishing tournament

The Jamestown City Council approved a donation for the upcoming fishing tournament on Lake Cumberland this summer.

The National High School World Series and National Championship Fishing Tournament will be coming to Lake Cumberland in June. It’s the first time this tournament has ever been held in Kentucky, and tourism officials say it will be the largest fishing tournament ever held on Lake Cumberland.

It is estimated 4,000 to 5,000 spectators will make their way to Lake Cumberland for the event, along with 450 or more anglers competing in the tournament. Previous host cities have reported a $2 million economic impact from hosting the tournament.

The Lake Cumberland Tourism Office received a grant that would cover some of the costs of hosting such a large tournament, but they are also seeking sponsors to help cover remaining costs.

An initial motion by Councilman Dwight Richards to donate $5,000 as a Gold Sponsor for the event died due to lack of a second. A motion by Councilman Tony Wright to donate $2,500 as a Silver Sponsor was seconded by Councilman Mitchell Marcum was approved by the council without opposition.
