The Jamestown Fire Department was called out early this morning to a fire at the Stephens Pipe and Steel location that formerly housed Fruit of the Loom.
Fire crews were called out at around 12:40 this morning. Once on scene, firefighters found fire on the roof and in the poly coat section, with heavy smoke inside the area.
All of the workers were evacuated due to the fire.
16 firefighters responded to the scene and were able to control the fire in a little under an hour. Firefighters stayed on scene for three hours checking for hot spots and extensions.
Fire Chief Jeff Landers said the building suffered heavy fire damage to the roof and some equipment, but it contained to the original fire area. Heavy smoke and water damage also occurred.
The Russell County Sheriff’s Office, Jamestown Police Department, and Russell County Dispatch assisted.
