Sports complex could have major economic impact

A potential sports complex on French Valley Road could have a major economic impact on Russell County.

A feasibility study was performed by The Sports Facilities Companies. It was funded by the Russell County IDA and the Bank of Jamestown.

The study indicates potential economic impacts ranging from $5.7 million in Year 1 to $1o.5 million in year 5 for a more locally focused facility. For a larger, regionally-oriented development, economic impact ranges from $12.3 million in Year 1 to about $22.4 million in Year 5.

It is believed such a complex would create economic growth in the surrounding area by hotels and restaurants.

Projected costs, based on the study, range from around $22.4 million for a smaller facility to around $30.8 million for a larger development.

The IDA has agreed to provide property if the project receives funding and moves forward. However, federal funding would likely be needed to make the project a reality.

The county and the cities of Russell Springs and Jamestown have been seeking grants to fund a sports complex.
