The Laker Baseball team advanced to the state quarterfinals with a win over the 8th Region Champion Simon Kenton Pioneers yesterday.
The Lakers came out on top by a score of 4-1.
The Lakers struck first, as a two-run home run by Mayes Gosser in the first inning gave the Lakers an early 2-0 lead.
The Pioneers scored their lone run in the second inning to trim the lead to 2-1. The Lakers added two more runs in the 5th inning as Walker Stephens drew a walk with the bases loaded and a sacrifice fly from Tanner Stringer scored Ayden McGowan to make it 4-1.
Junior Owen Loy came up big on the mound for the Lakers. Loy entered in the third inning, and gave up only one hit over 4 2/3 shutout innings while striking out 4 batters.
Senior Austin Bartrug got the start for the Lakers, pitching 2 1/3 innings and giving up 1 run on 5 hits and striking out 2.
Adam Walters, Mayes Gosser, and Ayden McGowan each recorded hits for the Lakers.
The Lakers will play in the quarterfinals of the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop State Tournament tomorrow against the 7th Region Champion Trinity Shamrocks.
Trinity, an all-boys private Catholic school in Louisville, is widely viewed as the top team in the state and enters Saturday’s matchup riding a 23-game winning streak.
Russell County will take on Trinity at 9 a.m. CT tomorrow at Legends Stadium in Lexington.
