City of Liberty moves toward banning medical cannabis operations

Following suit with the county, the City of Liberty is moving toward prohibiting medical cannabis operations within the city.

The Liberty City Council held a meeting this week with the council moving forward with the first reading of an ordinance prohibiting the sale, cultivation, or dispensing of medical cannabis within the city.

Two of the six city council members expressed their disagreement with the ordinance, which will have a second reading and final vote, likely taking place next month.

Medical cannabis, also known as medical marijuana, was legalized in Kentucky last year after receiving approval by the state legislature and being signed by the governor.

The state can begin issuing business licenses for medical marijuana later this year.
