Lakers, Lady Lakers pick up wins in district doubleheader

The Russell County Lakers and Lady Lakers were victorious over Monroe County in a district doubleheader at Laker Gym Friday night.

The Lady Lakers defeated the Lady Falcons 43-42 in the first game of the night.

The Lady Lakers started strong and held a nine-point lead at halftime, but the Lady Falcons came out strong in the third quarter and the teams were tied at 29-29 headed into the 4th quarter.

In the final frame, the Lady Lakers were able to close out strong and picked up the one-point victory to improve to 11-8 on the season and 3-3 in district play.

Rachel Bolin and Aysha Sutton led the Lady Lakers, finishing with 11 and 10 points respectively and 7 rebounds each.

In the nightcap, the Lakers picked up a 54-48 win over the Falcons.

Monroe County started strong, leading 25-24 at halftime but the Lakers tied the game at 39 to end the third quarter and finished strong to pick up a six-point win.

The win moved Russell County to 10-10 on the season, and 5-1 in district play.

Braydon Cerrato led Russell County with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Maddox Shearer added 12 points and Owen Loy scored 11.

The Lakers and Lady Lakers are back at home for another district doubleheader at home tomorrow when they host Cumberland County.
