The Russell County Laker and Lady Laker Basketball teams picked up key district wins at home last night over Cumberland County.
In the first game, the Lady Lakers came away with a 47-40 victory.
The game was close throughout, as Russell County was able to enter halftime with a two-point lead. The Lady Lakers were strong in the second half and scored 16 points in the 4th quarter to secure the victory.
The win gave the Lady Lakers a key victory in a hotly-contested 16th District as the Lady Lakers now hold a 12-8 overall record and a 4-3 mark in district play as the Lady Lakers and Lady Panthers will finish with a 1-1 split in the regular season series.
In the second game of the night, the Lakers started off strong against the Panthers, building a 15-9 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Panthers came out strong in the second quarter and took a 27-25 lead into the halftime break.
However, the Lakers owned the second half, outscoring the Panthers 38-22 after halftime to claim a 63-49 victory.
The Lakers are now 11-10 and hold a 6-1 mark in district play.
Both Russell County squads will go on the road Friday. The Lady Lakers travel to McCreary Central, while the Lakers will hit the road for a matchup with Caverna.
