Today is the observance of Veterans Day, a day of recognition for more than 1,000 veterans that call Russell County home.
According to the United States Census Bureau, more than 1,000 veterans reside in Russell County with the majority having served in the Vietnam era.
The data shows around 440 Vietnam veterans reside in Russell County, with another roughly 300 having served in the Gulf War.
The data shows around 100 veterans in Russell County having served in the Korean War and nearly another 100 having served in the armed forces following the September 11 terror attacks.
According to the census data, less than 10 World War II veterans reside in Russell County.
