KY sees encouraging youth turkey season; general season opens April 15

If the results from Kentucky’s youth turkey season are an indication, hunters of all ages should be encouraged about the prospects for the upcoming general season, which opens statewide on April 15 and continues through May 7.

Youth hunters harvested 1,889 birds last Saturday and Sunday, up almost 30 percent over last year and the highest harvest total for a youth season since the 2020 pandemic year when youth hunters took 2,251 birds, according to state wildlife officials.

The results match state wildlife biologists’ expectations for a good year for 2-year-old birds based on the above-average turkey brood survival rate recorded in 2021.
