House Bill 50 aims to make city councils, school boards partisan

A bill in the Kentucky House aims to make city council and school board elections in Kentucky partisan races.

For as long as most county school boards and city councils in Kentucky have been elected, they’ve been on the ballot without Republican or Democratic partisan labels.

Currently, cities can decide on their own whether or not they want to elect their councils in a partisan manner.

According to the Kentucky League of Cities, less than 10 of Kentucky’s 400+ cities do this.

Both the Kentucky League of Cities and Kentucky School Boards Association oppose the bill.

The bill is expected to be heard in the House Elections Committee today.
