Explosion sends five to hospital in Clinton Co.

Fire and ambulance units from Clinton, Cumberland, Russell and Wayne counties responded to a fire that occurred in neighboring Clinton County on Thursday, according to WANY Radio.

Clinton County 911 was notified at 10:50 a.m. of an explosion at a well being drilled on Hwy 1076, near Hwy 696.

According to reports, five people were injured. Three people were transported by ambulance then airlifted to regional hospitals. Two others were transported to Medical Center Albany by a personal vehicle.

Albany Fire Chief Robert Roeper said a spark from the motor of a truck parked next to the rig apparently triggered the explosion.

The Environmental Protection Agency was called in to lead the investigation into the incident and will be on scene for the next couple of days.

The Albany Fire Department and Clinton County Emergency Services are assisting in the investigation. The Clinton County Sheriff’s office also responded to the scene.
