Local wild turkey harvest down slightly from a year ago

With the 2022 wild turkey hunting season now over, total harvest results from this season have been released by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife.

In Russell County, hunters took a total of 202 turkeys with 198 of those being male while four were female. Of that number, 199 were taken with a firearm, one with archery, one with a crossbow and one by muzzleloader. In 2021, a total of 204 turkeys were taken in Russell County.

The neighboring counties of Pulaski saw 459 turkeys harvested, Adair 412, Casey County 313, Wayne 310, Cumberland 221 and Clinton with 171.

Statewide, a total of 26,840 turkeys were taken by hunters this season, a decrease from the 29,221 harvested in 2021. The Covid year of 2020 saw nearly 32,000 wild turkeys taken statewide.
