Lady Lakers win at home over Wayne County

The Russell County Lady Lakers came away with a convincing win over Wayne County at home Tuesday by a score of 52-35.

The Lady Lakers jumped out to an early lead, holding a 27-12 edge at halftime and led by as many as 21 in the 4th quarter.

The Lady Lakers had one of their better offensive performances of the season, shooting over 53 percent from the floor and knocking down 7 of 15 three pointers while only turning the ball over 9 times.

Sophie Shearer led the Lady Lakers in scoring with 17 points, followed by Aniyah Coffey with 13 points.

Maleah Preston finished with 8 points and a team-high 7 rebounds, and Jaterria Coffey and Karley Luttrell each added 6 points for the Lady Lakers.

Defensively, the Lady Lakers blocked 5 shots and came away with 7 steals.

Four of those blocks came from Hannah Yates, and Aniyah Coffey led the Lady Lakers with 3 steals.

The Lady Lakers now sit at 6-8 on the season, and will take on Cumberland County in a district doubleheader Friday night at Laker Gym. The Lady Lakers will play in the first game, scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m. with the boys game to follow.
